Small towns and
countryside SE of Plzen, West
Bohemia, Czech Republic
As you land in Prague,
the first thing that catches your eye is a checkerboard of green, each
with
its own small village nestled close to the next one.
As you drive you see the rolling hills and
valleys, winding rivers and small lakes, tops of rocky hills covered
with trees
and a single chateau/castle.
We spent the first 3 weekends
walking from one small village
to the next. Sundays are especially
enjoyable when the families are also walking or bicycling, even those
with baby
strollers, on the mountain paths close to home (strong wheels).
What most impresses me is the
extensive system of walking
and bicycle paths from town to town and within cities.
In the towns there is
always a sidewalk on at least one side of the street, separated by
walking
bricks on the right and a paved lane marked for bicycles on the left. In the woods the trees are marked with white
and red,
yellow, green or blue stripes so you can find the trail on
a series of 72 detailed maps. So Lonnie
and I have
walked the whole SE countryside outside of Plzen,
from village to village, through the fields, along the river banks and
thoroughly
love the slow pace of the countryside. These
are the towns we passed through: Brucna,
Cernice, Stenovice, Utusice, Radobycice, Hradiste,
Koterov and
Stary Plzenec.
Attached are photos from
late March when the temps were
still quite chilly and skies not yet blue. I
hope this expresses the natural beauty we are enjoying.
